We discuss the tension between her parenting ideals and the chaos of daily life, particularly during a hectic car ride home. This reflection prompts us to question the effectiveness of gentle parenting amidst overstimulation and the demands of modern family life.
5730 Gentle Parenting Revisited - Article Review

In this episode, we explore the complexities of gentle parenting, discussing its ideals and the frustrations it often brings to parents. Polly Dunbar shares her personal journey and the moment she stepped away from this approach during a playful outing with her son. We examine the challenges of never saying no and validating every feeling, highlighting how such practices can sometimes blur necessary boundaries. Through candid reflections on real parenting scenarios, I advocate for authenticity in parent-child interactions over scripted methodologies. We also critique the potential pitfalls of overly emotion-centered parenting and underscore the importance of establishing boundaries for a child's security. By sharing my own experiences, I emphasize the need for genuine connection and emotional honesty in nurturing family dynamics. Ultimately, we ponder the balance of supporting children's emotional development while grounding them in the realities of life and personal accountability.

GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND AUDIOBOOK!

https://peacefulparenting.com/

Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!

Also get the Truth About the French Revolution, multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material, as well as targeted AIs for Real-Time Relationships, BitCoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-Ins.
5718 The Truth About 'Gentle Parenting'

In this episode, I explore the subtle differences between gentle parenting and peaceful parenting. While peaceful parenting focuses on a non-violent approach, gentle parenting aims to create emotional connections, which can lead to pressure and feelings of inadequacy for parents. Through personal anecdotes, I illustrate how children reflect adult behaviors, emphasizing the significance of active listening to prevent escalated meltdowns. I discuss the evolution of parenting strategies, cautioning against overly permissive interpretations of gentle parenting that lack necessary boundaries. I critique societal pressures and the expectations created by social media, suggesting that a “sturdy parenting” model offers a balanced approach. This framework encourages genuine listening while maintaining parental authority, ultimately fostering healthier family dynamics and equipping children to navigate their emotions effectively.

5698 My Critique of Authoritative Parenting!

This lecture examines the differences between authoritative and authoritarian parenting, based on Gwen Dewar's research. It defines authoritative parenting as a balanced approach that combines warmth with clear expectations, promoting maturity and empathy in children. The discussion also critiques the reliance on emotional coaching without a strong moral foundation, arguing that such an approach may hinder children’s ability to handle real-world challenges. The speaker calls for a parenting strategy that incorporates resilience and moral integrity, preparing children to navigate complexities while maintaining open communication.

Authoritative Parenting: https://parentingscience.com/authoritative-parenting-style/

"Hey Stef! How are you preparing/have prepared Izzy for the harsh world, in the context of peaceful parenting?"

"A lot of people say they believe in the theory of evolution, but how many do actually understand it? What do you think?"

"should we send our daughter to private school? She has been homeschooled her whole life and then last year she went to private school for about 80% of the school year (we did a late enrollment). We wanted her to continue to go, but she does not want to go, citing disagreements with classmates, teasing. Overall, we think it's a good school and our other 2 kids enjoy going there. What is the balance between pushing your kids outside of their comfort zone and also taking into consideration them not wanting to do something? Our kids were forced into piano when they were younger and hated it so we stopped. They will occasionally say they were glad they were forced to play piano because it gave them a skill and they will still play. That's the moral dilemma I am trying to articulate... thanks Stefan!"

"Tucker Carlson remarked recently that Bitcoin was probably invented by the CIA.
In this episode, I explore the contrasting philosophies of authoritative and peaceful parenting, shaped by my childhood experiences within a large family. I reflect on the importance of setting clear boundaries and enforcing consequences, especially in a society that often rewards negative behaviors. Through personal anecdotes, I discuss the balance between authority and emotional connection, emphasizing the necessity of teaching children about the consequences of their actions. I advocate for nurturing open dialogue and respectful communication, highlighting the role of negotiation and understanding in parenting. Ultimately, I encourage parents to introspect on their own standards, aiming to raise emotionally intelligent and respectful children.

GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND AUDIOBOOK!

https://peacefulparenting.com/

Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!

Also get the Truth About the French Revolution, the interactive multi-lingual philosophy AI trained on thousands of hours of my material, private livestreams, premium call in shows, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!

See you soon!

https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2022

Sunday Morning Live 1 September 2024

In this episode, I tackle the challenges of political expression in a climate of fear and hostility, responding to a listener's experience of backlash for supporting a candidate. We discuss the complexities of political allegiance, coercion, and the implications of silence in discourse.
The conversation broadens to examine economic dependency and its effect on societal attitudes toward change, alongside philosophical questions about self-ownership and moral principles. I critique the neglect of peaceful parenting in libertarian thought, highlighting its role in perpetuating cycles of violence.
Ultimately, I stress the importance of action over rhetoric, particularly in parenting, as a means to foster values of non-aggression and freedom in future generations.
5533 Spanking Debate!

In a recent discussion, I debated the concept of peaceful parenting with Bob, who argued that children inherently have lower moral standing than adults. I countered by emphasizing the increased moral responsibility towards children, highlighting that they deserve higher moral considerations. We delved into the topic of consequences for parental actions like spanking, advocating for interventions that prioritize education and anger management over punitive measures. Acknowledging the power imbalance between parents and children, I stressed the need for tailored approaches that prioritize the child's protection and well-being. The discourse illuminated the complexities of balancing discipline with the child's welfare and underscored the importance of proactive interventions to uphold the best interests of the child in challenging situations.

Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!

NOW AVAILABLE FOR SUBSCRIBERS: MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING' - AND THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI AND AUDIOBOOK!

5528 Peaceful Parenting Interview

Stefan Molyneux joins Ryan McCormick in a deep dive on peaceful parenting, exploring the power dynamics and moral philosophy often overlooked in parent-child relationships. Discussing the shift from physical to verbal abuse, they touch on societal impacts and insufficiencies in positive role models. Stefan challenges beliefs on discipline and addresses the importance of self-reflection for parents to nurture empathy in children. The conversation outlines the pillars of peaceful parenting and emphasizes the transmission of ethical values amidst societal influences. Stefan advocates for peaceful parenting as a solution to societal dysfunctions, critiquing reliance on violence in child-rearing, and underscores the need for secular ethics to uphold universal moral standards. Calling for a shift towards peaceful parenting for societal transformation, Stefan highlights its potential to cultivate harmonious communities grounded in peace and voluntary interactions.

Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!

NOW AVAILABLE FOR SUBSCRIBERS: MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING' - AND THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI AND AUDIOBOOK!

5316 PEACEFUL PARENTING AND UPB - Locals Answers

UpB question: I may be mistaken on the tenets, but if the basis of UPB seems to be offenses against someone's wishes/boundaries (rape being not UPB because it is not possible for it to be consensual, thus always guaranteed to be against someone's wishes/guaranteed to be breaking their boundaries...), then why can something only be immoral if it's part of a category that has to be against someone's wishes?

What if someone does something intentionally sadistic, such as knowing someone's trigger and pushing against it, but that thing is not physical but, let's say, sonic (making a certain noise known to be distressing)? Or lies about someone, to be more general? Just because something can be, in your assessments, not a case of immorality in the Category, why does that mean that the whole category is now off the table to not be UPB?

Emotions have opposites: happy/sad, mad/calm, laughter/serious...

What is the opposite of temptation?

What are some great ways to teach children about evil and how to recognise it? How do you make it age appropriate?

What are your thoughts on the difference between an assertive tone vs a raised voice/yelling. The way my wife speaks to the children sounds sometimes like yelling, but to her it sounds confident and assertive. For example, my son was fooling around going down the stairs while I had my other son in my hands and she saw and spoke harshly to him saying "stop, turn around, go downstairs safely", and he cried. I think he just got scared and was in an already stressful situation going down stairs, but I also thought it sounded very close to yelling.

I have wondered how much my early childhood trauma of being yelled at a lot plays into my current interpretation of her voice, but even then the difference seems to me somewhat subtle. How can I objectively identify these two cases?

How do we stop ourselves becoming corrupt in this now corrupt world? This world and society reminds me of Batman: the dark knight rises.

As a person in my early 20s there was a time before the Internet and tech.
4811 Stefan Molyneux on Trump, Politics, Communism and Peaceful Parenting!

Philosopher Stefan Molyneux interviewed by Buck Johnson.

My guest today is the proprietor of, "Freedomain", the biggest philosophy show in the world. He is none other than Stefan Molyneux. I was honored to bring him on to discuss his exodus from talking politics, although we are fortunate to get a number of political takes in this episode. We also discuss his deep appreciation for philosophy and what it means to him. Stefan has been slandered with the slur of racism and we get into why he believes that has happened. He's also a passionate proponent of "peaceful parenting" and he gives a very eloquent monologue as to exactly why.

The Counterflow Podcast is a weekly show featuring discussions and interviews with people who are outside of and critical toward mainstream liberal and conservative politics. Counterflow challenges the conventional right/left binary and is concerned with the more important distinction of free vs unfree. The show will feature thinkers from all backgrounds, who do not fit into the narrow framework of fashionable opinion. The show will address cultural and lifestyle issues as well as philosophy and politics. Host Buck Johnson (formerly of The Death To Tyrants Podcast) is a musician and firefighter and has always had an interest and drive to go one way while everyone else runs the other direction.

Find Stefan's works here: https://www.freedomain.com/

Connect with him here: https://www.freedomain.com/connect/

Catch his live streams here: https://dlive.tv/freedomain

Free Documentaries: https://www.freedomain.com/documentaries

Free novel: https://www.freedomain.com/almost

▶️ Donate Now: https://www.freedomain.com/donate
▶️ Sign Up For Our Newsletter: https://www.fdrurl.com/newsletter

Your support is essential to Freedomain, which is 100% funded by viewers like you.
4262 Living With a Pathologically Disobedient Kid

"This is a journey no family would choose, and the outcome is unclear even under the best of circumstances. Here is one boy’s story.

Before Oscar* got kicked out of his first preschool, he was upset about lunch. Not long into the school year, the 4-year-old expressed his displeasure with the midday meal by dousing his tray with milk. When his teacher brought him to the director's office to be disciplined, Oscar was unrepentant. He reached his tiny arm across the director's desk and swiped its contents onto the floor.

It was already clear to his mother, Sarah, that something was off. Oscar's tantrums were nuclear; his disobedience was beyond correction. And he was so impulsive that when someone else's child climbed into a gorilla cage at the Cincinnati Zoo, Sarah was seized by terror—and sympathy. Given the number of times Oscar had broken free from her at the zoo and run off in search of adventure, it was sheer luck that he hadn't ever landed in a cage himself.

Now 14, Oscar has been diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He still throws tantrums when he doesn't like what's on the lunch menu. But when he runs off now, he sometimes comes home in a police car. His behavior is more self-destructive than criminal, but it tends to attract attention.

Once, when Sarah took her kids—Oscar and his older brother plus their two younger sisters—grocery shopping, Oscar decided he'd had enough before Sarah had gotten through her list. She urged him to be patient. Instead, he ran to a nearby dollar store, where he raged to a clerk that he was going to kill himself by drinking bleach. The clerk called the police, and Oscar ended up in a children's hospital, where he was involuntarily committed as a suicide risk.

Kids like Oscar are regulars in hospital mental-health wings. They're also overrepresented in after-school detention halls and juvenile justice centers—and, when they grow up, in jails and prisons. We see them on the news when they do something dramatically reckless, like climbing into a gorilla's cage—or when they commit an act of violence. The recent wave of school shootings has brought aggressive, impulsive young offenders to the forefront of public consciousness.

So how do we keep explosive kids from becoming destructive, dangerous teens and adults? Armchair parenting experts tend to promote harsh punishment, arguing that even the most challenging kids will straighten up if given significant consequences for their actions: a good long grounding, say, or a strategic spanking. Many of us shake our heads at the overly indulgent parents who, we believe, allow their kids' behavior to escalate unchecked.

But research reveals that, contrary to conventional wisdom, harsh discipline backfires when it comes to pathologically disobedient kids. The best way to keep them from ending up on the nightly news is, instead, a skill-building, problem-solving approach grounded in compassion.

Experts in the so-called disruptive behavior disorders—which include ODD and conduct disorder, and which often accompany ADHD—say that instead of doling out punishment, we need to help these kids develop the coping skills and impulse control that aren't innate to them.

"It's only counterintuitive if you haven't been paying attention to the research that's accumulated over the last 40 to 50 years," says child psychologist Ross Greene, who founded the nonprofit Lives in the Balance, which advocates for changing the way we treat behaviorally challenging kids. "And that research is pretty compelling."

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/201809/living-pathologically-disobedient-kid

▶️ Donate Now: http://www.freedomainradio.com/donate
▶️ Sign Up For Our Newsletter: http://www.fdrurl.com/newsletter

Your support is essential to Freedomain Radio, which is 100% funded by viewers like you.
3504 Anti-Male Cognitive Dissonance | Brendon Marotta and Stefan Molyneux
